Global Canon

What does it mean to globalize the canon?

This is one of the most pressing questions in academia, and it will be the central focus of this research strand.

For our research cluster, diversifying the canon and broader curricula is more than a problem of representation; it involves capturing the global lives of ideas.

This means appreciating aspects of an idea that came alive or animated actions in other contexts, beyond the referentality of European thought.

In order to substantively globalize the canon, however, it is imperative that we think seriously about the meaning of the global as a value and as a norm.

We aim to facilitate a formal dialogue between those within UBC and those outside of UBC who are currently trying to globalize the canon of political thought.

This collective effort features all members of the cluster and we welcome the participation of other scholars, particularly those working on African political thought.

This strand will have a pedagogic focus.

How would global political theory be different from comparative political theory?

What role the does the global play in defining a new kind of political theory research agenda?
