We are an interdisciplinary group of scholars and students at UBC who are investigating the multitude of ways that anticolonialism has taken shape across the globe in response to four centuries of European imperialism and settler colonialism.
Our work starts from the premise that a global approach allows us to unearth the exchange of ideas and the connections of solidarity across cultures, places, oceans, and eras that are and have been vital to the evolution of anticolonial thought.
In bringing together indigenous scholars, scholars studying settler colonialism, and those who focus on imperialism, from vantage points like political theory, sociology, indigenous studies, history, asian studies, and english, we are able to consider historical and contemporary forms of anticolonial thought.
Through our conversations and research, we seek pathways to decolonize and deparochialize teaching and curricula rooted in Eurocentric political thought, and we aim to improve our collective understanding of the global connections that have and continue to shape anticolonial thought.
From 2024 - 2026, we are hosting a series of symposiums and keynote speakers on our four research strands, as we work to build a network of academics and students from all disciplines, at UBC and around the world, who are interested in creating a framework for understanding the global history of anticolonial thought.
Our Research is in four key areas:
- Anticolonial Ideas of the Global
- Land + Seas: Global Connections
- Histories of Colonialism
- Global Canon
